On 25 September 2004, the WI and the Millennium Green Committee presented their first joint fund-raising venture. We had expected Miss September, Miss October and Miss November from the Calendar Girls, but Miss November had been delayed at an airport, so we only got the other two ladies. However, they gave an extremely entertaining talk to a spellbound audience ( it has to be said overwhelmingly female) and announced that they were well into their second two million pounds of fundraising for Leukaemia Research. They sold and signed books and calendars after the talk. A raffle was held, with some interesting prizes, notably a signed photo of Julie Walters and a bottle of House of Commons whisky and Mrs Tiffin of Hoddlesden WI won the booby prize of two considerably bigger buns with cherries. Afternoon tea, comprising a drink of tea or coffee and home made cakes rounded the afternoon off nicely. We have received nothing but positive feedback from the event and thank everyone who played a part in making it such a success. |
