We have received a grant from ‘Awards for All’ to enable us to set up a Nature and Histoy Trail on the Green. You will probably be aware of the Saxon Road or ‘Limmer’s Gate’ (also known as the ‘Donkey Pad’), which runs along the far end of the Green near the culvert, and the adjacent Slack Cottages which are now demolished, but there is also a rich industrial heritage because the site was previously Place’s Pipe works, with the famous twin chimneys. We are currently collecting together maps, photographs and the memories of people who remember what Hoddlesden was like when Place’s was running, so that we can identify where specific areas on the Green were used in the production of the pipes. Our new Youth Committee are actively involved with this project. We have engaged the services of a naturalist to identify plant and animal species on the Green and an ornithologist to explain what species of birds visit us during the year. From this we will be able to produce a leaflet with a guided walk around the Green with marker posts at designated spots so that you will be able to understand what is around you from the points of view of history and wildlife. We hope to have the official opening in Spring 2006. Information will be posted on the website to keep you informed. UPDATES HERE |
