The Sundial

In 2002, Vernon Carus Limited of Hoddlesden was approached to discuss ideas to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.  A Millstone was erected in the village for the Silver Jubilee and it was decided that a sundial would be a fitting tribute.

In order to minimise vandalism a special kind of sundial was ordered.  This is an analemmatic model.  This is a big word disguising a simple idea.  When a person stands on a designated spot, the shadow cast by his/her body tells the time.  A very clever man  designed the sundial and it was installed over the winter 2002/2003, and a very kind man named Mr Roland Spencer from Vernon Carus Limited authorised payment.  Special thanks also go to Mr Jon Bury of the company and Mr John Morgan who has represented the company at meetings in the village.

We would like to thank all those involved in this project which has made a very valuable addition to the green.
